"Dowson was now at Dieppe, now at a Normandy village. Wilde, too, was at Dieppe; and Symons, Beardsley, and others would cross and recross, returning with many tales, and there were letters and telegrams. Dowson wrote a protest against some friend’s too vivid essay upon the disorder of his life, and explained that in reality he was living a life of industry in a little country village; but before the letter arrived that friend received a wire, “arrested, sell watch and send proceeds.” Dowson’s watch had been left in London—and then another wire, “Am free.” Dowson, ran the tale as I heard it ten years after, had got drunk and fought the baker, and a deputation of villagers had gone to the magistrate and pointed out that Monsieur Dowson was one of the most illustrious of English poets. “Quite right to remind me,” said the magistrate, “I will imprison the baker.”
A Rhymer had seen Dowson at some cafe in Dieppe with a particularly common harlot, and as he passed, Dowson, who was half drunk, caught him by the sleeve and whispered, “She writes poetry—it is like Browning and Mrs Browning.” Then there came a wonderful tale, repeated by Dowson himself, whether by word of mouth or by letter I do not remember. Η τομή είναι μεγάλη ανάμεσα στην προ- και στην ύστερη μεταπολεμική εποχή του 20ού αιώνα: ο λογοτεχνικός κανόνας και οι διάφορες εκφάνσεις του μετά την αποδόμηση, βγαίνοντας από τον κλειστό θάλαμο και διεκδικώντας ενίοτε ρυθμιστικό ρόλο όχι πια μόνο στην αξιολόγηση, αλλά και στη γένεση των κειμένων, έχουν παρεισφρύσει σε μεγάλο βαθμό στον αυτοσχολιασμό (παρακείμενο) και τελικά στην ίδια την αυτοβιογραφική αφήγηση. Θα έλεγε κανείς, "μα πάντοτε δεν ίσχυε αυτό;" Όχι, οι ρόλοι ήταν αυστηρότερα προδιαγεγραμμένοι παλαιότερα. Όταν ο/η αυτοβιογράφος δεν μπορούσε να αποφασίσει αν πρόκειται για απομνημόνευμα, αυτοβιογραφία ή βιογραφία ή απλώς έκλεινε το κείμενο -χωρίς χαρακτηρισμό- μέσα σε φάκελο που βρισκόταν στο αρχείο του, αυτό δεν ήταν εμπόδιο για την αφήγηση αυτή καθεαυτήν...

Es handelt sich um eine Art Paradigmenwechsel zwischen der Zeit vor und nach dem 2. Weltkrieg, insbesondere nach den 70er Jahren. Der übermäßig laut gewordene Diskurs über den literarischen Kanon, der nun über seine beurteilende eine zunehmend regulative Rolle in der Entstehung der Texte einnahm, drang auch in die Autobiographie ein. Sowohl in den (metanarrativen) Paratext als auch in die Erzählung. War dies nicht immer der Fall? -könnte jemand fragen. Ich würde sagen, nein, sicher nicht in einem solchen Ausmaß, die Bereiche waren strikter abgegrenzt.  Als sich früher der/die AutobiographIn nicht entscheiden konnte, ob es sich um Memoiren, Autobiographie oder Biographie handelte, oder ganz einfach das Selbstzeugnis ohne Titelhinweis in einen großen Briefumschlag steckte, war dies kein großes Hindernis bei der Textschaffung...
